In November, deans from the Gallogly College of Engineering presented Cheryl Carney with the GCOE Superior Staff Award.
Carney has more than 30 years of service with OU, with most of those years dedicated to the School of Industrial and Systems Engineering. Carney is retiring from the School of ISE at the end of 2022.

After a competitive internal application process, the GCoE selected recipients for a chair and two professorships.
OU ISE Professor Kash Barker was awarded the John A. Meyers Professorship. Prof. Barker has been a faculty member in the School of Industrial and Systems Engineering since 2008 and is a David L. Boren Professor and an Anadarko Petroleum Corporation Presidential Professor. He has an extensive publication record and is known for his work in operations research and risk analysis. He has served as an editor for several reputable journals and has recently received a Fulbright fellowship for spring 2023 in Finland. All of the PhD students he advised have gone on to positions in academia. He has received a significant amount of funding from multiple federal agencies and he also has an impressive number of collaborations with international universities.
Rachel Bennett, a Ph.D. student in the OU School of Industrial and Systems Engineering, received a student poster award at the inaugural Oklahoma Conference for Statistics, Biostatistics and Data Science.
Bennett's presentation, titled “Early Detection of Preeclampsia using a Scalable Deep Neural Network Algorithm,” focused on detecting signs of preeclampsia (high blood pressure or hypertension) during pregnancy using deep/machine learning.
Bennett conducted the research under Talayeh Razzaghi, Ph.D., an assistant professor in the OU School of Industrial and Systems Engineering. Bennett shared her results at the conference and also received a cash award for her contributions.
INFORMS is the Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences, the primary professional organization for research and practice in operations research fields. Two new faculty members joined the OU School of ISE in the fall of 2022. They are joining OU ISE’s Aerospace and Defense Systems impact domain, specifically in the area of smart manufacturing processes.
Rui Zhu, Ph.D., joins the School of Industrial and Systems Engineering as an assistant professor. He holds a bachelor’s degree in manufacturing systems and design engineering from Seoul National University of Science and Technology in South Korea, a bachelor’s in manufacturing systems and design engineering from Northumbria University Newcastle in the United Kingdom, a master’s in industrial engineering, a master’s in mechanical engineering and a doctorate in mechanical engineering all from The Pennsylvania State University. Prior to joining OU ISE, Roh was employed as a researcher in the Systems Integration Division at the National Institute of Standards and Technology.
Cesar Ruiz, Ph.D., also joins the OU School of ISE School as an assistant professor. He has a bachelor’s degree in business engineering from Escuela Superior de EconomÃa y Negocios in El Salvador. He earned a master’s and a doctorate, both in industrial engineering from the University of Arkansas. Prior to joining OU ISE, Ruiz held a postdoctoral position in the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering at the University of Southern California. His research interests range from data science for engineering applications to engineering-informed machine learning for additive manufacturing.

An ISE doctoral student, Leili Soltanisehat, was among eight students from the OU Gallogly College of Engineering selected to receive this semester’s Dissertation Excellence Award, a $5,000 award created to encourage doctoral students to graduate with excellence.
Soltanisehat, a visiting assistant professor of analytics at the University of Tulsa, defended her dissertation entitled “Risk-Based Evaluation and Management of Cyber-Physical-Social Systems during the Pandemic Crisis” in July of 2023.
